At Cairo we stayed at the Mena House in Giza. Originally constructed as a hunting lodge for Egyptian royalty in the 1860's, the Mena House became one of the Middle East's most famous hotels, serving as a hospital in World War I and hosting Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt and Chang Kai Shek during the Second World War. The rooms in the Palace section of the hotel were well appointed, service was a little slow but overall very good and the restaurants were excellent - complete with belly dancing and a whirling dervish.
